Reps set for e-parliament as Gbajabiamila inspects facilities ahead of resumption – ORDER PAPER

OrderPaperToday – As part of efforts to achieve its legislative agenda, the House of Representatives is set to go digital when it resumes from its annual recess next Tuesday.

In this regard, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila undertook an inspection tour of the facilities on Friday after the completion of the installation of some technological devices for electronic voting and electronic registration for attendance and participation at plenary.

He expressed commendation on the level of work done so far, saying “these system was put together by the leadership and  the House through a lot of efforts of well meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies and particularly a gentle man who was introduced in the House and took it as his Corporate Social Responsibility.”

The Speaker said further: “We promised electronic voting. It’s seamless. With electronic voting, the chamber is now paperless. All the documents that you need for legislative business is already uploaded. The legislative agenda, the order paper is uploaded on a daily bases for the benefit of all the members to follow discussion”.

He also revealed that the system contains a search engine for members to research on particular issues raised on the floor for discussion.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the inspection, Chairman, House committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Benjamin Kalu, assured that within the first week of resumption, everything concerning electronic parliament will be working.

Mr. Kalu also expressed that there will be training of members on how to use the electronic devices.

With this development, members will now be electronically registered and vote electronically in the case of bills or motions passage instead of the manual voice vote or registration as regards their attendance.

Recall that the national assembly earlier postponed its resumption date from September 15th to September 29th to enable the installation of the electronic devices.
