OrderPaperToday – Women journalists under the auspices of the Nigeria Union of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has praised #EndSARS protesters for their resilience and dedication in calling for the end of police brutality and misconduct of the defunct Nigeria police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the union also condemned the arrest and continuous detention of the publisher of Power Steer, Mr. Tom Uhia Oga, who has been held by the Nigeria Police in the last four days.

Deliberating on the State of the nation during the chapter’s congress on Saturday in Abuja, the female journalists praised the youth protesters for rising to the occasion and demanding for accountability from all elected officials and all those at the helms of affairs in the country.

The communiqué was signed by the chairperson and secretary of NAWOJ FCT, Stella Okohsene and Amaka Solomon.

It read: “We identify with the on-going protests across the country seeking for the reform of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.

“We, however, urge that the protest remains peaceful and the protesters continue to conduct themselves within the ambit of the law.

“We decry deaths recorded during the protest and urge the security agencies to desist from using force on the protesters but rather provide security for them against miscreants who may try to hijack the process.”

They noted that women and children are most affected by the brutality and extrajudicial actions of security agents, even as they urged the Inspector General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, to go beyond the disbandment of SARS and replacing it with another unit.

The women body also condemned the hardship and poverty in the land and urged women and children to brace up and prepare for the 2023 general election and ensure that only politicians who have the interest of the country at heart are elected.
